Frequently Asked Questions

Sizing & Fit

How do I know what size harness to buy for my dog?
Measure your dog's chest girth (the widest part just behind the front legs) and neck circumference before ordering. If your dog falls between two sizes, size up since a harness can always be tightened further, while one that's too small will restrict movement and rub. Each product page lists specific size measurements for that item.

Is the TrailPaws dog harness good for hiking specifically, or just everyday walks?
Our Reflective No-Pull Dog Hiking Harness is built specifically for trail use. It features durable nylon construction, reflective stitching for low-light visibility, a top handle for helping your dog over obstacles, and a no-pull dual-clip design suited to uneven terrain, not just flat sidewalks.

Hiking & Trail Care

Is it safe to hike with my dog in hot weather?
Dogs regulate heat through panting, which burns water fast, so hydration and cooling matter more than people expect. Offer water every 15 to 20 minutes on warm hikes, avoid the hottest parts of the day, and consider a cooling vest for flat-faced breeds or dogs that overheat easily. Watch for excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy as warning signs to stop and cool down immediately.

How do I stop my dog from pulling on the leash during hikes?
A no-pull harness with a front clip gives you more control than a back clip alone, since it redirects your dog toward you rather than letting them lean into the pull. Many owners also find a hands-free bungee leash helpful since the shock-absorbing design reduces sudden jolts for both dog and owner.

What should I pack for a day hike with my dog?
At minimum: a properly fitted harness, a portable water bottle with a bowl, a treat pouch for training and recall, and paw balm for after the hike. For longer or hotter hikes, also consider a cooling vest, boots for rough terrain, and a poop bag dispenser. See our full gear checklist for more.

My dog hates wearing boots, what should I do?
Most dogs do an exaggerated high-step walk the first few times they wear boots, which is normal and usually fades within a few short sessions. Start with short indoor wear before a real hike, and pair it with treats so your dog associates the boots with something positive.

How do I clean muddy paws after a hike?
Wiping paws with a damp towel works for light dirt, but for consistently muddy trails, a dedicated paw cleaner cup makes the process faster and contains the mess. Always check between toes and pads for debris, ticks, or foxtails, especially in spring and summer.
